About

Our name

The name Xanadu originates from the paradise-like city of Kublai Khan's summer capital in China. This legendary city was renowned for its beauty, harmony, and abundance, making it a symbol of an idyllic and sustainable way of life. Similarly, permaculture is based on the principles of living in harmony with nature, using resources sustainably, and creating abundance through ecological design. At Xanadu Permaculture, we embody this philosophy in our work, using permaculture principles to create regenerative systems that benefit people and the environment. Our name reflects our commitment to creating a sustainable, abundant, and harmonious future through permaculture design.

Our mission

At Xanadu Permaculture, we are committed to creating a sustainable future by designing and implementing regenerative systems that support the health of the planet, its people, and its communities. Our mission is to provide education, resources, and services that empower individuals and organizations to build resilient, self-sufficient ecosystems that integrate the best practices of permaculture and ecological design. We aim to foster a deep connection with nature and promote a holistic approach to life that embraces the principles of diversity, cooperation, and abundance. Through our work, we strive to inspire and empower others to become active stewards of the earth, and to create a world that is in harmony with the natural systems that sustain us all.

Our values

Our Founder

The founder, owner and lead designer of Xanadu Permaculture is Philip Wischmeyer. Philp's life has been a journey of self-discovery and adventure. He has spent his life seeking knowledge and experiences that lead to a deeper understanding of the world and the human experience.

Born on a large farm, Philip developed an early appreciation for food production and the interconnectedness of all living things. This led him to explore music and piano as a child, to serving in the military, to working in the construction industry as a BIM modeler and mechanical systems designer, and eventually to becoming a small business owner and founding a nonprofit centered around supporting the local food system in his area.

Philip's thirst for knowledge has taken him on many paths, including the study of permaculture, sustainable food production, wild foraging, mycology, mindfulness meditation, and more. His dedication to learning and exploration has allowed him to see the world through many lenses, and to connect with people from all walks of life.

In his pursuit of self-discovery, Philip has built a passive, strawbale-insulated home for his family, worked to develop a permaculture design on his family's 11-acre homestead, and developed a deep appreciation for the power of mindfulness and compassion. His experience has allowed him to understand the human condition and form authentic bonds based on trust and non-judgment.

Through his work with Xanadu Permaculture, Philip seeks to share his knowledge and expertise with others, to promote sustainable and ethical practices, and to inspire others to connect with the world around them in a meaningful way.

Reviews

"Philip provided such a fantastic service!! He gave me a very in-depth consultation about my yard, what I hoped to have in my garden, the layout, and the area (for zoning), and very soon thereafter he gave me a beautifully detailed, customized, and comprehensive pdf guide to getting my permaculture garden started, including a variety of edible plants from which to choose, so I can work around my family's tastes. I can't praise him enough - his hourly rate is *unbelievably* low for what you get. 15/10, would work with him again in a heartbeat."

"Amazing permaculturist, gave me so many things to work on in my own project!"

"Philip is "the real deal". He is really passionate and knowledgeable about permaculture and sustainability and has a great vision for the future."

"Phil was a good listener and also had a lot of great ideas and feedback. Definitely recommend!"
